The following comment is from past guests Keith & Lori from their B&B review web site:

"The little town of Pine Island is located in the Warwick Valley, just below the Hudson Valley region. It is just north of the northernmost part of New Jersey. This area has plains known as the Black Dirt Region for exactly that reason...the dirt in the fields is a dark, thick black. This region was previously the bottom of a glacial lake which eventually receded. In the late1800s, settlers drained the remaining water and found some of the most fertile soil in the US. Sweet Empire State onions are grown in the black dirt, and we could actually smell the sweet onions as we drove on some of the elevated roads by the farms.
We arrived in the area on Saturday, September 30, the height of the apple harvest/festival. Warwick, a charming small town in the region, was mobbed with city fold eager to pick their own apples, so we retreated to the country roads. Having both grown up in rural suburbs, we had done enough apple picking in our lives, but for those of you who haven't, September is a nice time to visit this region (but plan ahead, as there are crowds.)"

HISTORICAL SITES
Historical Society of the Town of Warwick - PO Box 353 - Warwick, 10990 - (845)986-3236 - Organized in 1906, it is one of the largest historical societies in the state. It presently has more than 500 members and owns five architecturally significant old buildings and a railroad caboose.

One of the Society's most ambitious undertakings was the drive to obtain Historic district designation for the core area of the Village of Warwick. This was achieved in 1984 after ten years of painstaking work, and resulted in Warwick being listed in both NY State and National Register of Historic Places.

The properties that the Society owns and maintains are the following:
Shingle House - Forester Avenue. Oldest existing building and first home built in the Village of Warwick (1764). This little saltbox structure's six rooms contain many fine old furnishings and artifacts of the 18th & 19th centuries.
• 1810 House - 80 Main Street. This early 19th century saltbox cottage houses a wealth of memorabilia of early Warwick, as well as a collection of fine antique furniture and furnishings. Particularly interesting is the extensive collection of mementos of Frank Forester, famous author and sportsman of the mid - 1800s.
• Old School Baptist Meeting House - High and Church Streets. Built in 1810, this imposing structure crowns a hill just above Lewis Park on Main Street in the Village of Warwick. Both the interior and exterior of the Meeting House present an exceptionally pleasing appearance. Its wine-glass pulpit and barrel ceiling are outstanding features. It is still used on occasion for Society sponsored activities.
• Zacariah Ketchum House - 26 Church Street. One of the oldest original houses in the Village of Warwick., it is believed to have been the home of the Meeting House's builder. This attractive structure - with its handsomely carved pilaster doorway and fireplace mantels - underwent painstaking restoration and renovation in 1978.
The Barn - Build about 1825, this typical rural structure houses a splendid collection of early tools, farm implements, appliances, horse drawn sleighs and carriages, etc.
Please note: The Shingle House, 1810 House, Ketchum House and the Barn are open to the public Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2-4:30 during July and August, or by appointment.
