The following comment is from past guests Keith & Lori from their B&B review web site:

"The little town of Pine Island is located in the Warwick Valley, just below the Hudson Valley region. It is just north of the northernmost part of New Jersey. This area has plains known as the Black Dirt Region for exactly that reason...the dirt in the fields is a dark, thick black. This region was previously the bottom of a glacial lake which eventually receded. In the late1800s, settlers drained the remaining water and found some of the most fertile soil in the US. Sweet Empire State onions are grown in the black dirt, and we could actually smell the sweet onions as we drove on some of the elevated roads by the farms.
We arrived in the area on Saturday, September 30, the height of the apple harvest/festival. Warwick, a charming small town in the region, was mobbed with city fold eager to pick their own apples, so we retreated to the country roads. Having both grown up in rural suburbs, we had done enough apple picking in our lives, but for those of you who haven't, September is a nice time to visit this region (but plan ahead, as there are crowds.)"

OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS (In no particular order)
Ye Jolly Onion Inn - Pine Island, NY - 845-258-4277 (silly name? yeah well, we are THE ONION CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!! This is a very friendly and warm place, and a local landmark. Seating is first come, first serve and they do get a wait on weekends. They have a very nice cocktail lounge and wonderful bartenders so any wait goes by quickly! I also grew up there because the current owners' parents and my parents were the original owners.)
The Crystal Inn, 12 Amity Road, Warwick, NY - 845-258-4232 (Cuisine recently received a substantial upgrade and is now one of the finest restaurants in town; bar, entrées include pan-seared swordfish and pan-roasted filet mignon; great salads and desserts just about two miles from here).
Chateau Hathorn in Warwick, NY - 845-986-6099 (5 star, elegant continental cuisine, fireplaces in all of the dining rooms and an amazing wine cellar - make friends with Helene and you might be able to arrange a tour!!! Dress nice for this one but jackets are NOT required, this is the country after all!).
The Dautaj at The Warwick Inn - 845-986-3666 (quiet & intimate, newly opened northern Italian cuisine.)
Landmark Inn in Warwick - 845-986-5444 (wonderful rustic country dining - great food! Did I mention the ghosts? Never seen them and Mike the owner says it's hogwash because he used to live upstairs with his family, but hey, I've lived here longer!)
Ten Railroad Avenue - 845-986-1509 (Great Spanish & Italian food, live entertainment Fri. & Sat. guitar or piano. Pepe, the owner is from Barcelona and was the maitre'd at Elaine's in NYC for 15 years before he came up here to open his own place. Beautiful Mediterranean feel to the new upper rooms.)

Zana D's - 845-986-1801 - Railroad Ave., Warwick. Situated in an historic renovated hotel ballroom alongside the equally historic railroad. GOURMET FOOD PLACES AND CULINARY DELIGHTS
Bobolink Dairy, (Great cheeses and homemade breads), 42 Meadowburn Rd., Vernon, NJ;
Call 973-764-4888 for more info! Click here for information about internships available. Boblink owners, Nina and Jonathan White believe that everyone should be able to enjoy full-flavor, well-made natural cheese, at reasonable cost: artisanal cheeses that are designed to nourish the body as well as the spirit, as opposed to industrial cheeses which are merely convenient to make.
Dairy farmers should be well rewarded for making the most healthful, natural milk possible, while improving their land for the next generation. To accomplish this, we believe that it is necessary to break the cycle of overproduction, where lower margins force farmers to "squeeze the cows" to produce more milk, thereby driving margins even lower.
Cows and other dairy animals should also live well: producing only as much milk as is healthful for them. This means that dairy animals should live out of doors, eating grass and being milked seasonally, and not indoors, being fed grain, animal by-products and hormones, and being milked to death.
We want to raise our children in a world where farming, and indeed all other human activity, is done thoughtfully and sustainably, with long-term well-being taking priority over immediate gain. This requires thoughtful cooperation between producers and consumers.
